Beautiful Jim Key, the one-time ugly ducking of a horse who, at the turn of the 19th/20th century, became one of the most beloved animals of America. He was adored not for his beauty and speed but rather for his remarkable abilities to read, write, spell do maths and even debate politics. He was trained with endless patience and kindness by one of the most renowned horse-whispers of the day, Dr William Key, former slave, Civil War veteran and self-taught veterinarian. A remarkable story of an exceptional man and an exceptional horse. I hope people will be intrigued about both the horse and the man and their place in the animal welfare movement in America at a time when horses were still the main mode of transport; literally workhorses. Jim Key helped to illustrate, for those that were not yet aware, that animals are sentient beings, deserving of respect and kindness.
